A heavy pair of silver anklets (payals) is a staple in almost every Indian household. Yet, when families try to exchange or sell old payals, they are often furious with the valuation. It is common to be handed back only 40% to 50% of the item's original weight value. Why?
1. The Dirt and Grime Deduction
Anklets are worn on the feet, close to the ground. Over years of daily wear, dirt, sweat, soap, and skin cells become tightly packed into the intricate chain links and crevices of the jewelry.
When you place a heavily worn payal on the scale, it might weigh 100 grams. But a jeweler knows that 5 to 10 grams of that weight is pure dirt. They will proactively deduct this weight before calculating the silver value.
2. Enamel and Meenakari
Many traditional payals feature beautiful colored dots (meenakari) or heavy enameling. This is glass and wax, not silver. When the item is melted down, all of this burns away. The jeweler will deduct the estimated weight of these non-silver decorations.
3. Low Purity Soldering
Payals are made of hundreds of tiny silver loops soldered together. To make the solder melt easily, manufacturers historically used vast amounts of low-purity alloys. While the main body of the anklet might be 80% silver, the solder joints might only be 40% silver.
When the entire piece is melted in a crucible, the overall purity of the resulting lump of metal plummets. You might bring in what you thought was "pure" silver, but the XRF machine will read it at 65% or 70% purity.
How to Avoid the Shock
- Clean it first: Boil your old payals in water with baking soda and dish soap before taking them to the jeweler. Removing the dirt yourself prevents the jeweler from over-estimating the dirt deduction.
- Check for Hallmarks: Modern payals are increasingly being stamped with 925 or 900 hallmarks. These retain value much better than unmarked, vintage payals.
- Manage Expectations: Accept that heavy, intricate jewelry worn on the feet is a consumable fashion item, not a financial asset. The resale value will always be low.
