Imagine buying a stunning, heavy Kundan necklace weighing 100 grams. You pay for the gold, the making charges, and the stones. A few years later, you decide to sell it. The jeweler melts it down, and you are handed the value of only 40 grams of gold. What happened to the other 60 grams? You fell victim to the intricacies of stone weight and traditional jewelry manufacturing.
Gross Weight vs. Net Weight
The most critical concept in jewelry buying is the difference between Gross Weight and Net Weight:
- Gross Weight: The total weight of the jewelry piece on the scale, including gold, diamonds, enamel, stones, and hidden materials.
- Net Weight: The exact weight of the pure gold in the piece.
You should only ever pay the current gold rate multiplied by the Net Weight.
The Kundan and Polki Trap
Traditional Indian jewelry like Kundan and Polki are particularly dangerous for uneducated buyers. By design, these techniques require a significant amount of non-gold materials:
- Lac (Wax): Uncut diamonds (Polki) or glass stones (Kundan) are set into a gold foil cup, which is filled with lac (a natural resin/wax) to hold the stone in place.
- Enamel (Meenakari): The beautiful colored patterns on the back of the jewelry add weight.
In heavily studded Kundan pieces, the actual gold content can be as low as 30% to 40% of the total weight. The rest is stones, glass, and heavy lac wax.
How Unethical Jewelers Exploit This
A dishonest jeweler might weigh the piece (e.g., 50g) and deduct an arbitrary amount for the stones (e.g., 5g), leaving a "Net Weight" of 45g. You pay the gold rate for 45g. However, they conveniently forget to deduct the weight of the wax and enamel. You end up paying ₹7,000/gram for 15 grams of tree wax!
How to Protect Yourself
When buying studded, Kundan, or Polki jewelry, insist on the following:
- Explicit Breakdown: The bill must explicitly state the Gross Weight, Stone Weight, Wax/Enamel Deduction, and the final Net Gold Weight.
- Separate Stone Pricing: Stones should be priced separately (per carat or piece). Never allow a jeweler to charge you the "gold rate" for the gross weight and claim "the stones are free." Stones are never free, and they are usually cheaper than gold per gram.
